What it costs to run a city council campaign

Early last year when I began making plans to run for Huntsville city council, I had little idea of what the budget would be. I thought just around $1,000 would be all I’d really need. I was very wrong.

From the multiple experts I’ve listen to over the past year, $10,000 is considered a small budget, with $100,000 being considered “comfortable”.

So far, I have spent $1,190. This has gone to creating a website, designing and printing t-shirts from Green Pea Press, printing flyers from the library, ordering business cards, yard signs, and postcards. Each yard sign costs around $11. Each postcard costs $0.16. With nearly 45,000 people in district 4, giving away yard signs and handing out postcards start to really add up!

I’ll tell you upfront; I don’t need $50,000 or $100,000 like my opponents have to win this election, but I do need more financial support to ensure my odds of winning. My goal is to raise at least $5,000 by the end of July. With this money, I can order more yard signs. I can send out mailers (postage cost $0.25 per postcard). I can host events that celebrate our diverse community and connect our neighbors.

Every dollar helps. $1 goes to printing more forms and flyers. $5 goes to more office supplies. $10 is one more yard sign. $20 goes towards party supplies and rentals for our events.

Huntsville has changed a lot in the past 40 years since Bill Kling was first elected. Its time Huntsville elects someone who represents what Huntsville is today and will be in the future. Someone who represents the growth, families, and diversity we have in district 4. If you are as excited for the future of Huntsville as I am, please consider donating.
